Philosophy behind 2017

Opportunity. Tarragona 2017 is a means for the city to fully enter the 21st century. It is a process that will culminate in the Games being held, thanks to which Tarragona will demonstrate, to itself and to its neighbouring countries, its potential to successfully lead a social and a sporting project of international scope. Representing the Spanish Olympic Committee, Tarragona must now undertake the challenge and responsibility of showing, once again, this country's capacity to organise major sports events.

Legacy. Tarragona 2017 will be a unique event which will enable the city to become equipped with first rate sports facilities, in keeping with the size of Tarragona, for all of its citizens to benefit from after the competition. Also, existing sports facilities will be improved, the games will give a great boost to the region's already important communications network -the port, the airport, and the high speed train -, and will bring about the execution of the city's major projects such as the redesigning and restructuring of the Seafront. All of this will, moreover, involve significant job creation.

Olympic spirit. Tarragona 2017 will make the city the capital of Mediterranean sport and youth, with the exaltation of all of its historical, social and cultural values. An intangible and at the same time incalculable inheritance for Tarragona and all of the sub-venues that will participate in this unique experience. Tarragona's candidature to host the Mediterranean Games will undoubtedly contribute to spreading the Olympic values throughout the society understanding sport as the means to achieving peace, integration and tolerance. Also, holding the Games in Tarragona will imply an expansion of sport in the area. Success at sport and at organisation serves to stimulate children to take up new activities.

Involvement. The success of Tarragona in its candidature for the eighteenth Mediterranean Games relies on the unstoppable desire to host the great Mediterranean sports party. Hence, Tarragona 2017 wants to involve the whole of its society on the road started out on by the candidature for the organisation of the Mediterranean Games. Right from the start, the candidature has had the social and institutional support necessary to build a solid project with guaranteed success. The business fabric too has always believed in the candidature. Tarragona 2017 will work with the aim of achieving the maximum involvement of all of the social, sports, institutional and economic agents so that in 2011 it will be designated the venue for the Mediterranean Games.
