Traditionally, the Mediterranean Games have always been held in summer, although not at any specific point in the summer, at any time from June to October. However, given the tight international calendar of competitions and our desire to interfere as little as possible with sports meetings and events that are held during post-Olympic years (world athletics, swimming and European basketball championships) and those that are held annually during the summer period (Tour de France, IAAF Golden League), we have directed the Games towards the last week in June and the first of July. Almería 2005 started this trend, which will be followed in Pescara 2009 and Volos-Larissa 2013.
The duration of the Games has also changed with time. From the original fifteen days of competition, again, based on Almería's experience in 2005, the occasion has become shorter, now standing at 10, far more intense, days.
This novelty is a great step forward since it facilitates the presence of more sportsmen and sportswomen and greater interest for the media. All of this without sacrificing a calendar which includes two weekends.
Taking all of the above into consideration, Tarragona proposes a competition calendar from the Friday 23rd June until Sunday 2nd July 2017.
