Support

Since the first step towards the dream of the Mediterranean Games, taken in March 2007, Tarragona's candidature has gradually opened up to its citizens and institutions, whose positive reactions have shown great enthusiasm for the initiative. Today, the organisation of the eighteenth edition of the Games is a challenge and a stimulus for practically all of the social fabric of the city and surrounding areas.

INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT

The list of clubs, town halls and social, cultural and economic entities that have shown their support for Tarragona’s candidature is a clear example of how the project is taking root in all sectors of society. In addition to this is the political consensus, ratified by the official declarations of such institutions as Tarragona City Council, promoter of the candidature, the Provincial Council and the Generalitat (government) of Catalonia. On 15th April, 2009, the plenary session of the Parliament of Catalonia unanimously made a declaration of support for the candidature, in which all public entities, institutions and administrations were urged to give their backing for Tarragona 2017. On 29 April 2009, the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) designated Tarragona as its official candidate for the XVIII Mediterranean Games in 2017.

Personalities like HM King Juan Carlos I, or the honorary president of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, have also given their support in public for Tarragona to host the Mediterranean Games.

Also notable is the support received from the business fabric, which sponsors and collaborates with the candidature. Commercial and business associations have joined the project and participate actively so that the dream of the Mediterranean Games can become a reality.

SUPPORT FROM THE PEOPLE

If there is one thing that can pinpoint the support that the Tarragona 2017 project is receiving from the citizens then it must be the large number of volunteers who have already promised to collaborate with the candidature. In just two years of life, Tarragona 2017 already has over a thousand volunteers and the number is still growing thanks to social involvement.

On 31st March 2009, Forum Tarragona 2017 was created, a group of 32 men and women from different strata of the city’s social, economic and cultural life with the aim of disseminating the project among the society.
